Coon chosen for Central Highlands
Local cricketing prodigy Brett Coon has been selected to represent the Central Highlands in the U16 boys Cricket Victoria Country Cup.
The teenager has been heralded as one of the region’s future stars for several years, with his play in the junior arena earning him two J.C. Hunter Cup trophies as the MDCA’s under 16 champion player.
Alongside his duties as captain of the Colts Phelans under 16s in the Castlemaine and District Junior competition, Coon has been a key contributor to Clunes’ A grade side.
As a powerful batter and seamer, Coon currently ranks third in the Magpies run-scoring and wicket-taking charts with 94 runs and eight wickets to his name from seven matches.
After previous representative cricket success helping the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association win the under 15 J.D.H. McKenzie Cup last season, Coon said he’s excited to play in Cricket Victoria’s premier regional junior competition.
“To be honest, it means a lot to me. I take a lot of pride in my cricket,” he said.
“Just having the opportunity to be able to go and train down in Melbourne, really showcase my skills in a top competition and see all the facilities is really good for me.”
Coon said he was slightly nervous during the selection period, but believed his body of work over the off-season enabled his spot on the team.
“I was pretty surprised because we have a fairly strong and talented squad, so I’m thankful to get in and have the opportunity,” he said.
“At the start, I was sort of just happy to be there and get the opportunity. I got a little bit panicked when I saw a few numbers there, but I just tried to make sure I got to every training session.
“They selected the best ones that they thought and I was lucky to get into that.”
The Central Highlands opened their Cricket Victoria Country Cup with a two-wicket defeat against the Western Waves, but still have plenty of time to bounce back with four games in three days starting next Monday before finals.
“I’m just excited to see the range of talent out there and what I can do and what the squad can do,” Coon said ahead of the competition’s three-day carnival.
“I’m just trying to do the best I can and help the team out.”
