One of many local volunteer services, the Central Goldfields Community Register is looking to consolidate its future by recruiting more volunteers.

The community register is a vital phone answering service for people who are looking for a friendly chat, need assistance with being connected to a service or agency or who want to know more about council services.

Callers can be new or long-term residents and the community register can be accessed from 9 am until 4 pm on weekdays.

Coordinator Rosemarie Hosking said this is a unique volunteering activity as it can be done from home.

“We used to take calls from a space in the council hub but since the COVID pandemic hit we have been taking the calls from home,” she said.

Rosemarie said that the only qualities potential volunteers need are a friendly phone manner and the ability to be a good listener.

“There is little training involved however volunteers will require a police check and we can certainly help to organise that,” she said.

“We have lost some volunteers in recent times so we really need more people to step in and help out if the service is to continue.”

lf you are thinking about putting back into the community and are interested in volunteering from home, drop in to the Maryborough Volunteer Resource Centre office, located at the Maryborough

Railway Station on Thursdays from 10 am until 3 pm, or contact the centre on 0497 667 480 or maryboroughvrc@gmail.com.

The register calls Monday to Thursday weekly, fortnightly or monthly and is a free service sponsored by the Maryborough Police.
