Community members are invited to a public meeting this Friday on the proposed transfer station closures in the Central Goldfields Shire.
Community members are invited to a public meeting this Friday on the proposed transfer station closures in the Central Goldfields Shire.
The community-run meeting is intended to discuss the closure of transfer stations in Bealiba, Dunolly and Talbot alongside organising local opposition.
The proposed closures come as part of the Draft Budget 2026/27 which Central Goldfields Shire Council invited feedback on at the March council meeting.
This budget aims to improve their financial sustainability by finding efficiencies and cutting services.
However, the transfer station closures have seen vocal opposition from within the community.
Public meeting organiser and local David Hendrickson hopes the meeting will unite their voices.
“They’ll be advised on how to pull it into a community event so it’s all on the same wavelength,” he said.
Mr Hendrickson was the driving-force behind the Maryborough VicRoads protests and petition last year when the service faced closure.
“There is power in numbers and if we can form enough numbers to frighten these boys we’ll have a reaction,” he said.
Mr Hendrickson’s plans involve taking the issue to State Parliament if council vote in favour of the cuts in May.
“The shire here has proved once they’ve made up their mind they’ll do what they want to do so we’ve got to go above them and get the decision changed,” he said.
While his VicRoads petition is going to parliament, it’s unclear how this will work for the proposed transfer station closures.
Central Goldfields Shire Council invite the community to read and provide feedback on the Draft Budget 2026/27 by April 16 at 5 pm.
Submissions can be made using the online form, by email to mail@cgoldshire.vic.gov.au or delivered to 22 Nolan Street, Maryborough.
Mr Hendrickson’s public meeting, which is not connected to council, will be held at the Maryborough Tennis Club Clubrooms April 10 starting 6 pm.
