The Maryborough Community House will mark a very special milestone this week, celebrating its 40th anniversary of providing support to local residents.

The Maryborough East Neighbourhood House was officially opened on August 27, 1982 and over the years, has become the community house now standing in Primrose Street.

A day of celebration and festivities is planned to mark the occasion this Saturday, with stalls, activities and raffles up for grabs at the community house.

“We’re holding an event to celebrate 40 years of giving back to the community and we want the community to celebrate that with us,” Maryborough Community House’s Jo Cox said.

The community house’s history will be showcased from the early stages of its development to where it is now, telling the story of how the local community, sponsors and suppliers have helped shape the facility over time.

Formed as a place for residents seeking connection in the community, the community house offers a wide range of activities aimed at tackling social isolation head-on.

From art and craft, tai chi, gardening, choir, ukulele, singing as well as lunches, Maryborough Community House coordinator Jeannie Clark said the organisation continues to support the community.

“We’ve been supporting the locals here in Maryborough and the wider area for a number of years,” she said.

“Particularly through COVID we’ve been providing food relief which has even been beyond the boundaries of our shire.

“We have lots of activities back on here now, arts and craft, gardening, cooking, tai chi and plenty of others to help address social isolation and help build connections in the community.”

The celebration event will be attended by the community house’s original coordinator as well as the builder of the mudbrick building the house is currently located in.

Raffle prizes will be available throughout the day as well as a barbecue and special birthday cake

Ms Clark said over its 40 year history, the community house has continually grown.

“We’ve got a growing base of volunteers which is really great and the number of activities we run are always increasing,” she said.

“We’re acknowledging and celebrating all the work that people in the community have contributed throughout the years and continue to contribute to the community house and everyone is welcome to get involved.”

The 40th anniversary event will take place this Saturday, November 12 from 10 am until 2 pm at the Maryborough Community House, located at 23 Primrose Street, Maryborough.
