After down years from their expectations, both teams were motivated to make a good first impression with a new head coach.
It was the underdogs Dunolly who created more chances in the opening term, but the tandem of Lillie Wrigley and Zoe Aldridge weren’t able to find the bottom of the net consistently, scoring seven goals from 20 shots.
On the other hand, Jordan MacIlwain and Abbey Nalder found their shooting range immediately, giving Carisbrook a 13-7 lead.
The Redbacks made sure the Eagles would regret their missed opportunities, pouring on a 22-6 quarter while only missing one shot all quarter to increase the margin to 22.
Despite the Redbacks’ dominant quarter, Dunolly came out fighting to start the second half, aided by Wrigley and Aldridge finding their shooting form.
However, Carisbrook continued to pull away, as Nalder went a perfect nine from nine to help the Redbacks win the quarter 13-7.
With the Redbacks able to rotate their squad in the second half, their fresh legs were able to outrun the Eagles, finishing the game with a 21-8 final quarter to put the finishing touches on a 41-goal victory.
Nalder was robotically efficient for the Redbacks, missing two shots all game on her way to scoring 30 goals while McClure top-scored with 31 and Paige McLean made eight goals.
Aldridge and Wrigley scored 14 goals each with the pair making 58 percent and 46 percent of their shots respectively.
