MARYBOROUGH 9/62 def by COLTS PHELANS 6/104
Colts Phelans began their season strongly, with an impressive bowling performance restricting Maryborough to just 9/62 to record a 42-run victory.
The Owls, under captain Mitch McClure, had won the toss and elected to bowl to give themselves the best chance to chase down a target.
It appeared they had made the right call early on when Harry Lumsden struck with the score on 10, when he clean bowled Wayne Stubbings for six runs.
However, Colts were able to steady the ship when Ed Foreman came out for his first innings with the team, and immediately set out to build a partnership with Kane Shepherd. They were able to get the score to 30 when Shepherd holed out to McClure.
Another 20-run partnership followed, with Foreman’s innings, which saw him top score with 25, ending when he hit the ball straight to Martin Dell.
Soon after, Rhys Egan would run himself out, leaving Colts 4/59 and the game well and truly on the line.
The second and third members of the English trio that Colts had signed were left to steady things, just as Ed Foreman had earlier, and Callum Watts and Matthew Scott were able to successfully carry out their tasks, putting on a 31-run partnership that tipped the balance Colts’ way.
In search of quick runs, Watts was caught out by Zac McLeod, and Liam Tatchell holed out to Sam Bartlett, with Colts finishing on 6/104.
Lumsden was the pick of the bowlers for Maryborough, taking 2/15 off his four overs, including a maiden, while Ben Hoban took 2/19.
As it transpired, Colts’ 104 would be a good score on the Hedges Oval pitch.
In no time at all, the opening bowling partnership of Nicholas Henderson and Scott would help tear through Maryborough’s top order, with McLeod and McClure going out to catches very early in the innings — McLeod for one run, while McClure would end up scoring a duck.
Martin Dell and Lumsden were removed soon after, with both of them combining for three runs, leaving the Owls in desperate trouble.
When Sam Bartlett was removed for 13 runs, it signalled that Colts were set to win.
Rohan MacKay and Akon Mawien tried hard, putting on a brief partnership, but it was just not to be for the Owls, who were only able to muster 62 runs in response.
Watts was the pick of the bowlers with a cameo towards the end, taking 2/7 off his three overs, while Henderson’s bowling was superb, taking 2/8 off four overs, including a maiden over. Ben Stubbings (2/10) and Richard Clark (2/16) also made an impact with the ball, ensuring that the Owls just couldn’t get any flow into their innings.
Colts Phelans now moves on to the one-day competition, with a game against Laanecoorie Dunolly at Hedges Oval next Saturday, while Maryborough will have the week off.
