BEAUFORT 61 trail COLTS PHELANS 7/93
An outright victory could be on offer for Colts Phelans if they play their cards right against Beaufort on day two, however, it could yet prove crucial that they have already secured the first innings at this early stage of the season, given the extreme heat on offer which could yet call off tomorrow’s action.
A superb all-round bowling performance helped Colts bowl the Crows out for just 61 runs, with all five bowlers that were used making a discernable impact.
Nicholas Henderson, Richard Clark, Matt Scott and Callum Watts all took multiple wickets apiece, with Watts taking three wickets to help clean up the tail.
However, when it came time for Colts to face up to the Crows’ bowling attack, they too were unable to, for the large part, break away and put on a big partnership which could have put the game in their keeping by the end of day one, losing seven wickets before the close of play.
Instead, it means Beaufort come into day two with an outside shot of an outright victory, but will need to take three wickets in quick succession to give themselves a chance.
The day will start with Colts currently 32 runs in front, with Clark not out on three, while Dayne Baker will look to get off the mark after Watts’ late dismissal to end day one.
Ideally, it would be a good result for Colts if they could find another 50-60 runs on top of their 93 runs to give themselves a total to declare on to have hopes of an outright victory, while the Crows will be looking to get their final three wickets to keep the deficit to around 40 runs before they bat again.
If the Crows are to be any chance of turning it all around and win outright, they will need plenty of support in the batting department, particularly for Lachlan Oddie, who played a lone hand last Saturday afternoon, contributing 33 of his team’s 61 runs.
It will doubtless be important for Kriss Ellis, Charlie Dyer and Blake Jantzen to provide support at the top of the order if their time to bat comes.
For Oddie, it’s been a superb individual match — his 33 with the bat was followed with 2/29 with the ball, with the opportunity to add to that haul alongside Dyer, who has the figures of 3/22 at the moment.
Meantime, Colts have been well served in the batting department by Ed Foreman, Watts, Scott and Liam Tatchell, who have all provided double-figure scores, with Foreman leading the way with 30 runs.
