Colts Phelans are in the box seat to claim their third consecutive two-day win, and a spot in the finals to go with it, after two late wickets gave them the ascendancy on day one at Princes Park on Saturday.

A terrific knock of 72 from Dave Robinson was the impetus Colts Phelans needed to set a target of 184 runs, before captain Dayne Baker smartly declared late in the day and backed up his decision with two key wickets.

Opening pair Rhys Egan and Rhys Wagstaff were quick off the mark for Colts, putting together 24 runs in the first seven overs before Egan was trapped in front for LBW by Steven Shovan for 20.

Wagstaff then paired with Sebastian Borg for a 20-run partnership, which was ended by Jasper Trickey, who lured Wagstaff into a shot which was followed by a juggled catch by Shovan, ending the innings of Colts’ leading run-scorer for 15.

Borg soon fell victim to Trickey’s bowling, bowled for 17, leaving Colts on 3/63.

Maryborough would soon have their best passage of the day, with Ben Hoban getting two quick wickets, that of Baker and Harrison Kurzke, to leave Colts teetering on 5/89.

The one constant, however, was Robinson, and he was able to stay the course, eventually looking to cash in throughout the afternoon.

Bayden Macintyre was next to go, however, and he was run out for 11, leaving Colts on 6/109.

Combining with Johno Melton, Robinson would soon pass a well-deserved 50 — his first of the season with Colts, and the duo would put on 50 important runs for the seventh wicket.

Lachie Condie would soon come on and pick up where he left off in his last game against Clunes, picking up the key wicket of Robinson, before shortly after claiming Melton for 14 and Riley Govan for one.

Nick Henderson and Ben Stubbings put on a quick 20-run partnership before Colts elected to declare to give themselves seven overs at Maryborough’s top order.

It was a decision that paid off in spades, with Henderson bowling two maidens, while Baker, at the other end, claimed the wickets of James Scott for a duck and Mitch McClure for two, to leave the Owls in a precarious position at 2/4 after the opening day’s play.

Lachie Condie continued his hot form for the Owls with the ball, taking three wickets.
