Last weekend’s pair of matches was a critical juncture for Caris-brook’s season, needing some positive performances to maintain touching distance with the top four.

With their tight loss to Beaufort a step in the right direction, Caris-brook obtained an elusive victory by a thrilling four runs over Clunes, a potentially momentum-swinging win they desperately needed.

After being held to an average of 122.5 runs in their previous two innings, Carisbrook’s bats found their form last weekend, headlined by the returning William Coutts, scoring 86 runs while Dean Nalder belted an entertaining 53 versus Clunes from just 35 balls.

Despite posting 193, Clunes threatened to hand Carisbrook a fifth consecutive defeat until a game-saving spell from the debuting Alex Sutton steered Carisbrook to victory, with Sutton ending with 5/28.

Brayden Wright also delivered with the ball over the weekend, taking five wickets while emerging as a valuable bowling option.

While Carisbrook’s season seems revitalised by the double-header, the Colts’ campaign stumbled with two restless results, first tying against Clunes before losing in heartbreaking fashion to rivals Laanecoorie Dunolly by one wicket.

The cruel reality is that the Colts played well enough to win both games.

An outstanding 71 from Ben Evans and an exceptional spell from Nick Henderson had the Colts on top versus Clunes, while another spectacular innings from Asim Akhtar, who leads the competition with 205 runs, allowed his team to score 185.

However, key sequences in both matches didn’t go the Colts’ way, with a 70-run partnership between Ahmed Rehman and Mitch Coppick setting the stage for Coppick to tie the game with the final ball on Saturday.

Sunday’s result was arguably even more painful, with the Colts only needing three wickets with Laane still needing 70 runs before Laane found a way to surpass the Colts’ total with the second-last ball.

With Laane now nine points clear at the top of the table, Colts will hope to at least maintain that gap with a win against the team they recorded a six-wicket victory against back in round three.

After the quartet of Henderson, Akhtar, Evans and Jack Gallimore bowled Carisbrook out for 107, a quickfire 43 from Akhtar brought the Colts to the required target within 16 overs.
