It’s been a frustrating start to the season up to this point, but with some better weather in recent days, there is a good chance that we will finally see a full round of Maryborough District Cricket Association cricket this weekend.

This weekend marks a big local derby between Maryborough and Colts Phelans, to be played at Jubilee Oval at this stage after a fixture change from Princes Park.

There has just been one game of exposed form at the moment, with Maryborough’s win against Beaufort two weeks ago the only game that can truly be discussed.

If there’s anything to go by, it’s that Colts Phelans will have to put pressure on an excellent opening bowling duo of Harry Lumsden and Akon Mawien and score early runs to put their case forward for a victory.

In their first game together, Lumsden and Mawien consistently hit the spot against Beaufort, and were a big factor in the Crows only hitting 4/74 off their 20 overs.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen these two play — February 6, 2021 was the last time, in fact. On that occasion it was Sam Bartlett with the bat, and Jake Postle and Mick Malik with the ball, that did all the damage.

Bartlett scored at an impressive clip, scoring 83 runs off 90 balls before getting bowled, and was crucial to the Owls making 7/177 off their 40 overs.

In response, Colts were unable to find the runs needed to make a game of it, with the work of Bartlett and Postle ending their hopes early by restricting them to 3/11, before Malik took 4/19 to have them bowled out for 99.

Daniel McGregor and Dayne Baker fought hard, scoring 31 and 20 respectively to top score for Colts.
