After starting their respective seasons with two impressive victories last week, Colts Phelans and Laanecoorie Dunolly are set to meet at Hedges Oval to kick off their one-day season.
Colts were extremely impressive in their victory over Maryborough, particularly with the ball, restricting the Owls to just 62 runs.
Their new recruits proved crucial with both bat and ball, with Ed Foreman, Callum Watts and Matt Scott each scoring more than 15 runs with the bat, while both Watts and Scott were able to take wickets with the ball.
Additionally, Nicholas Henderson and Ben Stubbings took two wickets each and conceded just 18 runs between them off eight overs.
They will have to be at their best to ensure that Laanecoorie Dunolly cannot make quick runs this week, with Laane proving they’ll be able to make consistent partnerships again this season.
Three partnerships of 29 runs or more were key to Laane making 5/115 off their 20 overs, with Matt Smith, Troy Hannett and Zach Graham making 20 runs or more in their victory.
Laane proved to be just as damaging with the ball as well last week, with Joe Lovel and Benjamin Gunn leading the way with two wickets each, while conceding just 26 runs between them, with Clunes restricted to 6/85 off their 20 overs.
The meeting between these two teams will be their first since round 12 last season, with Laane victorious on that occasion by six wickets.
In that game, Colts were able to make a solid start, moving to 1/59 with Wayne Stubbins and Rhys Wagstaff making 30 and 18 respectively.
However, a Daniel Romeo inspired spell of three wickets saw Colts fall to 5/77, before Richard Clark provided some late resistance to make 23, helping Colts make 9/136. Romeo was the best bowler for the afternoon, taking 3/20 off his eight overs, while Gunn added 2/21 and Chris Lee 2/27.
In response, Laane were able to consistently get starts from all their batsmen, with five of the six batters making 10 or more runs. Smith led the way, making an excellent half century, while Mitchell Blackman made a solid 31 runs in support before departing. Laane were able to make their target of 137 with nine overs to spare, finishing on 4/142.
Dayne Baker and Henderson were Colts’ best bowlers, with Baker taking 2/21 and Henderson 2/35.
