Four A reserve games were completed on the weekend, with three standout teams starting to emerge from out of the pack.

Colts Phelans currently sit atop the ladder, but their cause was helped enormously on the weekend when they were able to defeat Natte Yallock without bowling a ball on the weekend, with the Swans forfeiting their game.

Hot on their heels is Carisbrook, with the reigning champions putting in a stellar performance to defeat Talbot.

Talbot were able to make a brisk start, scoring 37 runs without losing a wicket, and were doing as well as 2/71 at one stage, but lost their remaining wickets for just 44 runs.

Cooper Mark was the star for Carisbrook, taking 2/12 off six overs.

In response, Carisbrook were able to take control throughout their innings, with Jarryd Coghlan and Dean Nalder combining for an 83-run partnership to help guide them to an eight-wicket victory.

MKM and Laanecoorie Dunolly had an entertaining encounter, with 15 wickets and 248 runs shared between the two teams.

Late hitting from Bayden Macintyre helped guide MKM to 7/121, with Macintyre top scoring with 37 runs, while Craig Horner scored 30 runs.

Nathan Leist was the pick of the bowlers for Laane, taking 3/18, while Nick Earl took 2/18.

Liam Mottram helped anchor the majority of Laane’s innings in response, making 51 runs, but his dismissal with 35 runs still needed left Laane on 4/87, and with three further wickets for just 21 runs, it meant an exciting finish was on the cards.

But with Earl guiding the way with a quick-fire 14, Laane were able to hold on for a two wicket victory.

Bradley Reeves was the pick of the bowlers for MKM, taking 2/7.

Beaufort and Avoca’s game was over within 23 overs, with the Crows bowled out for just 29 runs in 18.4 overs, before Avoca were able to chase down their target for the loss of one wicket in just five overs.

Jason Hunt took a superb 3/4 off his eight overs, which included five maidens, while Nathan Holland was also among the wicket-takers, taking 3/12.

A magnificent 86 from Bradey Tranter was not enough to stop Maryborough from suffering a five-wicket defeat to Clunes, with the Magpies guided by a brilliant innings of their own from Fred Penhall.

Tranter’s innings helped guide the Owls to 4/120 off their 40 overs, hitting eight fours and a six. But he was removed just 14 runs short of a century by Paul Coon, who took 2/21.

In response, Penhall’s 74 helped guide Clunes for a large majority of the way, with the Magpies reaching 5/126 off 33 overs.

Oliver Cassidy was the best of the Owls’ bowlers, taking 2/11 off eight overs.

In the Redhouse Bakery 16 and under grade, Maryborough scored an 181-run victory over Laanecoorie Dunolly, with half-centuries to Judd Stevens and Jasper Trickey proving to be a highlight.

Laane were reduced to just 9/38 off 20.3 overs, while the Owls were able to enjoy a great afternoon last Saturday, scoring 5/219 off 53.1 overs.

Meantime, Colts were able to successfully defend a total of 114, bowling Carisbrook out for 90.

The work of Ollie Erickson, who took 2/6, as well as Riley Govan, who finished with figures of 2/8, were key to Colts taking victory.

In the final full round of A reserve before Christmas, the top two will meet when Colts Phelans host Carisbrook at Hedges Oval, while MKM will look to bounce back when they host Beaufort. Avoca will travel to Talbot, while Clunes will look to keep track with the top two when they host Natte Yallock. Finally, Laanecoorie Dunolly will host Maryborough.

And in the final game before Christmas for the under 16s, Maryborough will host Carisbrook, while Laanecoorie Dunolly will play Colts Phelans.
