Pat Cummins and Laura Westcott are excited to announce Smooth Street is finally opening its doors.

“It is always a bit of a daunting thing when you announce something like this, but 99 percent of the comments and feedback has been from locals who can’t wait,” Mr Cummins said.

With his own connections to Maryborough, Mr Cummins wanted to serve the community he grew up in.

“At least 18 to 24 months ago, we started talking about doing a drive through coffee shop somewhere. I went to high school here, I played junior football here, my dad worked here, mum worked in the hospital here. We have fond memories here,” he said.

“We spotted this vacant lot, which started some inquiries about what it would take for us to lease it.”

After waiting for approvals to get works on the site started, and mixed reactions on the idea they originally proposed, the couple are pleased to have eventually brought the business to life.

“This is where people can safely drive from Clarendon Street, and safely walk off High Street and sit in the sun and have a coffee. I think it will be a very positive experience,” Mr Cummins said.

“Once we started discussing some of the negative query that other coffee shop owners had about loss of business, our response was ‘we want to cater for customers who don’t want to or can’t get out of their car to get a coffee’. We are relatively niche in what we want to supply here. It’s a totally different niche we are offering.”

For them, this includes tradies with an early start who are unable to park with trailers or parents doing school drop off.

“The business is small, it is family run, we have done it ourselves, all of our staff are locals,” Ms Westcott said.

“We are looking forward to producing great service and great coffee. We want to thank a lot of people for the support, we are excited and we hope everyone comes down and gives us a try. There is a lot of love that has gone into this business.”

With their resources sourced from other local organisations, Smooth Street will also have an extensive menu covering a range of dietary needs including coeliac and lactose intolerance.

The official opening of Smooth Street will be at 6 am on Wednesday, August 13.

Located on 65 High Street, they will be open from 6 am until 2 pm from Monday to Friday and 7 am to 12 pm on Saturdays.
