Plans to put the best of ‘country’ on display have been dampened, with weather conditions cancelling this year’s premier agricultural event.
The 160th Clunes Show, originally set to run tomorrow, November 19, has been called off due to wet weather waterlogging the grounds.
This is the third time in a row the show has been axed — twice impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Organisers are disappointed with how things have panned out and say they had been eagerly looking forward to the event.
“We are devastated and know what a huge blow this is to so many people, including our own band of dedicated volunteers who have put so much into getting this event ready to go,” Clunes and District Agricultural Society president Jenny Redpath said.
She said the grounds had dried up last week enough for a couple of major working bees but things changed quickly.
“On Monday we awoke to another deluge and the grounds are once again too wet to host a show that is either safe or enjoyable — not for the exhibitors, not for the participants and not for those lining up at the gate,” Ms Redpath said.
A range of trademark country show events had been on the agenda including wood chopping, ute competitions, livestock exhibits, and a tractor pulling contest. The occasion would have also been marked with an inaugural Strongman exhibition and an interactive Grain Arcade.
“We had an awesome program lined up for our patrons,” Ms Redpath said.
“To those who were a part of our terrific program of events, we are so sorry and wish it could be otherwise.
“To our community and patrons, we thank you for your ongoing support and will do our very best to bring the show back, bigger and better in 2023.”
