Clunes residents can takefull advantage of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) as a new refund point has been opened in the heart of the town.

A new reverse vending machine refund point, installed by TOMRA Cleanaway, was introduced at Clunes IGA last Monday, providing a simple way for residents to recycle their eligible bottles, cartons, and cans.

The refund point is the fourth implemented in the Hepburn Shire, with the previous closest refund point at Creswick recording over 9500 containers in its first week earlier this year.

According to Clunes IGA owner Dianne Hill, introducing the CDS program will reap many benefits for the community.

“I think it’s a good environmental program and having an automated point locally makes it much more convenient,” she said.

“A lot of our customers are more elderly so they don’t do a lot of driving to other refund points in Ballarat and they just feel comfortable doing it here where we can help them with the machine.

“We announced [the opening] on our Facebook page and there were a lot of positive responses — there have been a lot of people that have said they have a number of bags at home ready to use the new system.”

The reverse vending machine doesn’t hold cash, residents can receive their 10 cents per item refund at Clunes IGA with a receipt, electronically, through vouchers, or donate procceds to registered charities and community groups.

Local registered groups include the Clunes Football Netball Club, Clunes Golf Club, and Central Highlands Rural Health.

The new refund point on 1 Service Street at Clunes IGA is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday, and 9 am to 6 pm on Sundays. For more information, or to find your closest refund point, visit cdsvic.org.au
