Clunes Quick Shear turns 10
Marking its 10th year, Clunes Quick Shear will be returning this weekend, raising funds to give back to groups that have helped the community most.

Clunes and District Young Farmers’ Darcy Gervasoni said the fundraiser has expanded throughout the decade, from what started as a wholesome event, has been overtaken by it’s most popular attraction.
“It’s a bit scary that it has been 10 years, it doesn’t feel like it. It originally started as a woolshed dance, and the quick shear side of it was kind of a novelty event,” she said.
“As the years grew on, we found the quick shear to be a more popular side of it, and we really started to encourage more people.”
Attendees can once again expect to see impressive and speedy shearing done in well under a minute. Last year’s feats included a winning 24 second shear, with the event’s overall record being 21.3 seconds.
“When we started, we only had one class in our quick shear. We now have five different classes,” Ms Gervasoni said.
“Some of the shearers we have in our open are representing Australia in the speed shear competitions, similar to a quick shear but not quite the same.
“It’s incredibly fast, both speed and skill. Not necessarily your quickest shear is going to be your cleanest. It’s about shearing a sheep fast and doing it well. Watching them shear, they are flying.”
This year, BlazeAid has been picked for the event’s major charity, a timely decision following a summer of numerous bushfires impacting the community.
“That was based on previous fires we had in the area, the Lexton fire, and Beaufort. We had members affected by those fires, BlazeAid came through and did a fantastic job, it’s not just repairing fencing, they come in and help the whole community,” Ms Gervasoni said
“This fire season has been devastating, and they are out in those communities again really supporting the farmers and the community.”
To mark a decade of the much loved event, there will be a vast addition of stalls and food vendors.
“We are growing a lot this year, we are going to have more vendor stores, more food, and they are all local businesses and local food vendors. We will have an auction and a raffle, all proceeds from the whole day will go directly to BlazeAid,” Ms Gervasoni said.
The 10th Annual Clunes Quick Shear is on this Saturday, February 28 at 1 pm, at the Clunes Showgrounds.
