Clunes and Colts Phelans were meant to have the bye in rounds one and two respectively.
But with the rain washing out both rounds, Saturday could be the first chance to see both teams in action at Hedges Oval.
Both teams were considered the second and third best teams in 2021/22 — Colts Phelans were able to finish second with a six win, one draw season, while Clunes were able to make the grand final as part of a five win, one draw season from their 12 games.
But a four wicket win to Clunes in the semi-final last year will give Colts Phelans great emphasis on looking for a small measure of revenge to open their season, as they look to take the next step and become a premiership-winning threat.
On that occasion, a terrific innings from Wayne Stubbings anchored the Colts innings, with his 62 propelling them to 7/156 off their 40 overs, with Tony Halliday taking 3/30 for Clunes.
But Clunes were able to have a much more even team effort in their knock, with Mark Allen, Brendan Ingram and Mitchell Coppick all scoring above 30 runs, with Allen top scoring with 47. Despite Stubbings’ best efforts with the ball, adding 3/21 to his top-scoring knock, Clunes were able to reach the target with five balls to spare, taking victory by four wickets.
The mood has been excellent around both teams, with just one departure between the two teams, while they’ve also been bolstered by fresh arrivals — Jude McGuire and Jackson Smyth arriving for Clunes, and English trio Callum Watts, Ed Foreman and Matthew Scott making the move to Colts Phelans.
The game has been moved from Clunes due to flooding in the area, with the game, at this stage, still planned to go ahead despite forecasted heavy rain tonight.
