The grants can be put towards outdoor decorations, community events, Santa visits, barbecues, music and other celebrations.

The following grants are available:

  • $500 available for small towns including Harcourt, Chewton, Campbells Creek, Guildford, Taradale, Elphinstone, Faraday, Fryerstown, Baringhup, Sutton Grange, and Metcalfe.

  • A total of $1500 each for Maldon and Newstead that may be used to fund several smaller initiatives from different groups.

  • A total of $4000 available for Castlemaine that may be used to fund a number of smaller initiatives from different groups.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s mayor, Rosie Annear, said council is proud to support community Christmas celebrations.

“Our community has consistently told us that Christmas decorations and celebrations are important to them, and that they wanted more from us when it came to celebrating this time of year,” she said.

“We listened and allocated on-going funding for Christmas celebrations in our yearly budget.

“Last year, there were decorations, community picnics and barbecues, live music, family activities and Santa visits.

“I encourage community groups to apply again this year and spread the festive cheer across our shire.”

Grant applications are now open and will close on Friday, August 15.

The application form is quick and simple, and available at www. mountalexander.vic.gov.au/Christmas-Grants, along with guidelines and more details.
