Councillor Grace La Vella proudly held the chieftain title for the 2024 Highland Gathering, which was an honour she never expected.

Once awestruck by the Highland Gathering’s chieftain as a child, former mayor Grace La Vella proudly took on the same position herself on Monday — becoming the fourth woman to hold the honour in the event’s recent history.

The face of Maryborough’s 161st Gathering, Ms La Vella was named chieftain in recognition of her ongoing contribution to the town as part of the Central Goldfields Shire Council.

With excitement and emotions high on the day, Ms La Vella said being offered the role was an unanticipated honour.

“I’m so elated and thrilled — when I was approached, I just couldn’t believe it. I was so surprised they were asking me to be the chieftain, it’s such a privilege,” she said.

“I have always been a huge supporter of the Highland Society and the event because they add so much value to the town so I felt special and extremely humbled when they asked.

“When I was younger, I never even thought of being a chieftain because it seemed so out of reach. I used to look at them in their uniforms and wonder how they got to that position but never thought I could do it myself so I do really appreciate it and it was a lovely thing for them to do.

“There were also slight tears in my eyes when I was watching the bands come down for the street parade — the whole experience has been amazing.”

Ms La Vella said the one-of-a-kind event had a positive impact on not only her but the entire community.

“Everyone just comes together to acknowledge our Scottish heritage,” she said.

“It has also been excellent for the town’s development because we get people coming in from across the state who stay in our caravan parks, shop in our streets and buy our food so it’s really important for Maryborough.

“I don’t think anything could come close to our Highland Gathering — it’s the love of our town.”
