Two of the Maryborough Family History Group’s founding members were recognised for their more than 30-year dedication to the volunteer group this week.
Group president Cheryl Lovel and long-time researcher and librarian Coralie Hutcheon received certificates and flowers acknowledging their dedication, which spans more than three decades.
The Maryborough Family History Group was formed in March 1993 and as Cheryl explained, it all started when she and Coralie read an advert in the paper.
“I saw an ad in the paper asking if anyone wanted to do family research, Coralie and I turned up and the group was formed,” she said.
“It’s been really good, I’ve made lots of friends and met plenty of people, I’ve even tracked down family members I didn’t know I had because of this group.
“It is nice to get an award, you don’t do this sort of thing for the recognition but it’s nice all the same.”
The group is currently on the lookout for new members and Cheryl encouraged those interested in learning about local history and meeting new people to get involved.
“We’d love to see some new members get involved, we had over 100 members at one point and those numbers have declined over the years,” she said.
“Researching local families and the history of the area is very interesting.
“We’ve gone around to different groups on day trips and things learning about local history.”
