It’s an exciting time for Maryborough Soccer Club’s Charlie Creasey, who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime when he heads to the Gold Coast for the West Ham United Foundation’s National Camp today.

The camp — which is held by the George Cowie Football academy in conjunction with West Ham United, is held for players who excel at regional camps, with coaches working with players over four days at The Southport School on the Gold Coast.

Skills and techniques will be implemented, as well as recovery sessions, education in football and a skills test, with the final day made up on an 11 v 11 trial game. Creasey could potentially receive an invitation to the UK Development Tour if he excels during the camp.

The junior side of the Maryborough Soccer Club has been crucial to funding Creasey’s journey to the camp, providing sponsorship for his journey to get to the camp, as well as hosting a family fun event to help support him.

“The club has been very supportive of what I’d like to do,” he said.

“It will be very interesting. There will be four English coaches and coaches from Australia and New Zealand in attendance.

“It was a bit of luck, getting here. We found out there would be a West Ham tryout in Ballarat from one of my coaches, Ilya, and they obviously liked me there.”

Creasey has ambition to move up in his soccer career as a result of the camp, and has worked on his craft all season long to get the best out of himself, training four nights a week — three nights in Ballarat, as well as one in Maryborough.

“Ideally, there should be a couple of A-League scouts here, so hopefully I get scouted out. If not, I’d love to go to the next level with the camp to get to the Development Tour,” he said.

“I have played anywhere in the midfield and defence this season, but I’ve been able to train with National Premier League players who have taken me to another level. I’ve been working on using the ball with my left foot a lot.”
