The first edition of the Goldfields Playing Area’s Charity Round was a success throughout the week, with teams and players getting creative all in the name of supporting the Maryborough Cancer Research Centre.

The final figure that was raised for the week was $4176.50, which came through green fees and raffle tickets throughout the week, with games on Saturday and Tuesday for round 11 of the weekend pennant, and round 15 of the midweek pennant.

According to Highland Bowls secretary Jason Arthur, all bowlers should be commended for the buy-in they showed throughout the week.

“The whole playing area got behind it, and all the bowlers as well. They were the ones that made the atmosphere of the week,” he said.

Many teams showed their creative side, in particular, Maldon, who dressed up in purple, as well as Newstead, who were creative with their outfits, while many individual players also dressed up in colours associated with cancer awareness.

Arthur said the camaraderie between opposition teams throughout the week was incredible, with plenty of positivity for how the week operated.

“I only heard positive comments across the week from teams. The competition between the teams and the players was lifted,” he said.

Member for Ripon Martha Haylett made a welcome appearance, according to Arthur, and the experience of being a Victorian-first was a key reason why she was invited.

“Being the inaugural event in Victoria was one of the reasons we wanted to invite Martha along,” he said.

Now,the Goldfields Playing Area is looking to make the next Charity Round bigger, looking at potential sponsorship opportunities, as well as enhancing the experience for players and spectators.

“With it being the first event, we were winging it a little bit in a way, but we’re looking at ramping up sponsorships and making the general vibe better for the players, and especially those coming to spectate as well,” Arthur said.

Lawn bowls action returns today, with round 16 of the midweek pennant as teams start arriving at the business end of the season, searching for finals spots.
