Returning on March 27, people from across the community are invited to an exciting day of competition and fundraising for the health of local communities.

Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is hoping to see $30,000 raised on their scorecard this year to fund vital healthcare services, special projects, scholarships and equipment.

The funds have previously directly benefitted programs such as patient transport, breast cancer screening, aged care improvements and nurse and student training. This year, however, MDHS CEO Nickola Allan said the specifics are still in the works.

“It’s always a really exciting opportunity for our staff to think about what will improve things for our communities,” she said.

“We’re just incredibly grateful for the ongoing partnership and what that means for our team and the community as a whole.”

The day is possible thanks to their ongoing partnership with True Foods and Maryborough Golf Club, having raised $220,000 since 2014.

Ms Allan, who plays “bad golf” every year, said it’s not about your skill level but instead just getting involved.

“What is great is you get here quite early in the morning and see a sea of people who are all here to engage in a fun community driven activity. It just fills you with joy,” she said.

“It’s something I love, it’s a really unique experience. Many people play just one day a year and this is their day on the calendar to get out and play golf, it’s awesome.”

The addition of lawn bowls for the first time continues this promise that anyone can have a go with a less strenuous event.

“Golf can be an arduous day when there’s 18 holes and it can be frustrating when those shots don’t go in or the drive doesn’t go where you want it to. I think being able to engage in something less strenuous on your body such as bowls is a really great initiative,” Ms Allan said.

This is Bonaventure Tai’s first golf day as general manager of the Maryborough Golf Club but he said he is always looking for opportunities to improve the day.

“Thankfully we had some very enthusiastic members over the last couple of months I’ve been here and this is the first time we’ve introduced bowls to be a part of the event. We’re looking at ways we can leverage and maintain that as part of the event on the day itself,” he said.

For those like Mr Tai, who admits his golfing is hit or miss, bowls might be a great way to get involved but in the end he said the whole idea is to have fun.

“[There’s] nothing more to it really. At the best of times I’ll have a good day but everyone does that, everyone has a bad day too. It’s really just supporting the purpose of the day itself and just coming together as a community,” he said.

Like the Maryborough Golf Club, True Foods managing director Jason Baker said the day is an opportunity to support the community any way they can.

“We’re based in Maryborough to support Maryborough. Not only as an employer but fundraising and doing what we can for the community,” he said.

The day is sure to be a highlight with many ways to take part. From entering a golf team of four or a lawn bowls team of three, sponsoring a hole or rink, donating a prize for the raffle or auction, or even joining as a non-player to enjoy the lunch and event atmosphere.

Entries will close on March 21, 2024.

“It’s something you remember for the rest of the year,” Mr Baker said.
