A Maryborough business has invested in an electric vehicle charging station in a bid to bring more visitors to the region and shift to renewable energy.

In the last 12 months, the Golden Country Motel & Caravan Park has made inroads into sustainable energy, installing 230 solar panels, batteries and a vehicle charging station.

Owner Dirk Arnold said the shift was in part to reduce costs to the business, while also offering a more environmentally friendly accommodation option for visitors.

“We had a high electricity bill and wanted to reduce that, but we also wanted to reduce our footprint and this was the logical step,” he said.

“We’ve got the house, motel and caravan park hooked up to solar now and the vehicle charging station as well.

“It is a big expense, but it’s worthwhile in terms of ongoing costs and reducing that environmental footprint.

“There are people who are considerate of the environmental impact their travel might have and being able to offer more sustainable accommodation is certainly appealing to them.”

Mr Arnold said the charging station would make Maryborough a more accessible travel destination for people with electric vehicles.

“We did have customers who had electric vehicles and they weren’t able to charge here at the business,” he said.

“We also want to get an electric vehicle ourself in the future so it made sense from both of those perspectives.

“It’s another tool we have to attract people to stay in the area which benefits everybody.”
