The Maryborough Cemetery Trust is on the lookout for a new sexton, as volunteers pitch in to maintain the grounds of the “community asset”.
The cemetery’s former sexton, Terry Treloar retired in July last year, with the trust searching for a candidate to fill the role.
Cemetery Trust chair David Bilton said Mr Treloar has since returned as a volunteer to help maintain the cemetery as the trust continue their search for a permanent solution.
“Terry retired in July and we appointed a new sexton but it didn’t really work out,” he said.
“Terry has actually applied to join the trust and has come back to volunteer his time with a few others which is good, we’ve had a lot of good reports on how the cemetery is looking in the last few weeks.
“We advertised for a new sexton a few weeks ago and there was a bit of interest, so we’ll see what happens.
“The hardest part of it is getting the right person who cares about what they’re doing, this is more than just a job.”
Mr Bilton said the cemetery was an asset, with many local families having a connection with the place.
“We do rely on volunteers who assist us with maintaining the cemetery and we’re always on the lookout for people to get involved,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s every day of the week or if it’s a couple of hours a week, it all adds up.
“The cemetery is a community asset, everyone in town practically knows someone who’s there so we’re always endeavouring to keep it in the best shape we can and in line with all the regulations.”
