The Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) is celebrating the contribution of nurses today as part of International Nurses Day.
Employing an approximate 300 nursing staff across its Maryborough, Dunolly and Avoca campuses, MDHS is the lead employer of nursing staff in the region and is today acknowledging the compassion, professionalism and round-the-clock commitment of its nurses.
“We deeply value and respect the many faces of nursing within MDHS,” executive director of nursing, midwifery and allied health Robyn Wilson said.
“We need to learn from the lessons of the pandemic and translate these into actions for the future, ensuring nurses are protected, respected and valued.
“We also want to give a big heartfelt thank you to our team of dedicated nurses who have worked so tirelessly over the past few years.”
MDHS provides an important training ground for nurses through a partnership with Bendigo TAFE, student placements and its Transition to Practice graduate program.
Ms Wilson said the value of nurses is evident across the organisation.
“There are a multitude of areas nurses specialise and are experts in,” she said.
“We’ve got nurses from every spectrum working in our community and we’ve got student nurses just starting their journey, nurse practitioners and our CEO, Nickola Allan, who is a nurse.
“Our nursing team at MDHS cover a broad range of services and specialties including perioperative care, gerontology (aged care), urgent care, acute care, community and district nursing, palliative care, drug and alcohol services, diabetes programs, women’s health, maternity care, dialysis, oncology, radiology, education, quality and leadership, in addition to our students — the future of nursing.”
If you are interested in becoming a nurse, the Victorian Department of Health is offering two free pathways to enter or rejoin the nursing profession as part of the Making It Free to Study Nursing and Midwifery initiative.
There are currently 10,000 scholarship positions available across 2023 and 2024 for new nursing and midwifery students embarking on an undergraduate nursing or midwifery qualification.
