Regional Community Vet Clinic (RCVC) is holding a cat de-sexing day this weekend in a bid to control cat numbers, improve health outcomes and support residents who are financially struggling.

RCVC is a Mount Alexander based non-profit organisation with the goal of establishing a clinic in Campbells Creek to support people experiencing financial difficulty in caring for their companion animals.

The organisation has already held a number of cat de-sexing days, neutering around 30 cats each time and RCVC co-director James Mack said it was an important service to offer.

“It’s quite frightening the number of kittens a single cat can have — a litter can be anywhere between one to six or seven cats and they can do that several times a year, it can get out of control very quickly,” he said.

“It’s not necessarily just about protecting wildlife, although that is a main function of this, it’s also about providing health benefits for cats both behaviourally and preventing ovarian cancer and that sort of thing in the future.

“Our aim with these clinics is to provide this service to people who are struggling financially, so those who are receiving government assistance or hold a concession or health care card.”

The de-sexing clinic will take place this Sunday, May 28 in Castlemaine and bookings are essential, as there is a limited number of cats that can be de-sexed on the day.

If you or someone you know could use this service and would like to book call 0493 447 394 as soon as possible as spaces are limited.
