Maryborough were unable to end their losing run against Castlemaine on the weekend, beaten by 36 goals.

A number of changes were made to the Magpies’ starting lineup, with regular midcourter Tori Chandler moving to goal attack, with Macy Tatchell coming in for her debut game. Tali Chadwick was also celebrating her 50th game with the club.

However, it was a fast-starting Castlemaine lineup who were determined to make every opportunity count in their race to secure a double chance finish, scoring 23 goals to open up a handy lead by the end of the first break. Maryborough scored eight goals, with Keely Hare scoring five, while Chandler slotted in to her role well, scoring three times.

It was much of the same in the second quarter as Castlemaine were determined to end the contest, scoring 17 goals to six to take a 26-goal lead at the main break. Both Hare and Chandler scored three goals apiece.

Maryborough’s best quarter was their third. A slight change was made as Alex Williams moved to goal keeper, while Finley Wagstaff moved to goal defence to keep Castlemaine in check. As a result, the goalscoring dried up, and Castlemaine were only able to score 11 goals for the quarter, while Maryborough added 10, with Hare scoring six and Chandler adding four. Nevertheless, the Magpies were still trailing by 27 goals at the final change.

Another change was made, with Chadwick moving to center and Tatchell moving to wing attack. But Castlemaine rediscovered their goalscoring touch in the last quarter, scoring 15 goals and holding the Magpies to six goals, with Hare scoring four goals and Chandler scoring two.

It was a day where none of the Magpies teams ended up winning, with the B grade, B reserve and 17 and under team all losing by 17 goals in a quirk of the afternoon.

Maryborough will now look to rebound and repeat their round two victory when they host Eaglehawk in two weeks time.
