Cassidy earns Dowling Shield berth
Maryborough young gun Ollie Cassidy will have another chance to impress cricket scouts across the state this summer when he heads to Carlton Cricket Club for the under 16 WJ Dowling Shield.
Cassidy’s selection with Carlton follows a solid campaign in last year’s J.G Craig under 15s shield with Spotswood, in which he was able to take six wickets and scored 14 runs, predominantly as a tail-ender.
Despite battling injury since then, Cassidy has continued to build his all-round ability, scoring his first century in Maryborough’s under 16 win over Newstead this season, while also taking two wickets in his only spell at A reserve this season.
Cassidy is also the sole Victorian country representative in the team, making his mark in a team largely consisting of players from within the northern and north-western suburbs of Melbourne.
The Dowling Shield will have 18 teams competing, giving cricket scouts plenty of options to look at throughout the competition, which runs within a two-week period, followed by two semi-finals and a grand final.
Cassidy’s spell at Carlton starts on Monday, January 6 with Carlton travelling to Casey Fields to play Casey-South Melbourne, while a double header on January 9 sees Carlton play at Princes Park, where they take on Greenvale and Essendon in rounds three and four respectively.
