Cassidy was able to make it count on Saturday morning, scoring his century off 51 deliveries, which included 17 fours and a six.

He was not alone in cashing in on runs, with fellow opener Keegan Doherty also finishing unbeaten on 87 from 62 deliveries, while Kaleb Jardine also scored an unbeaten 50 as the Owls scored 4/306 off their 40 overs.

It was the Owls’ first game since they were knocked out in the preliminary final stage last season and Saturday showed that they will be keen on going further this time around.

Newstead never gave in throughout the morning, despite fielding an inexperienced lineup, and will look to continue improving on the field.

Elsewhere in the under 16 competition, Colts Phelans scored 4/175 in their innings against Barkers/North/Harcourt at Jubilee Oval, with Brett Coon and Tate Williams scoring unbeaten 50s, while Charlie Erickson also batted well in making 36.

Carisbrook’s under 16s continued their learning curve with their inexperienced lineup and will be hoping to score at a good rate next week, with a strong Castlemaine United team making 4/279 in their match at Western Reserve.

Axel Purcell took 1/25 off his seven overs, while Josh Nalder took 1/34 off seven. Saige Purcell also took a wicket, taking 1/22 off three overs.
