Carisbrook wins in high-scoring affair
REDPATH TYRE AND BATTERY SERVICE A GRADE CARISBROOK 4/237 def CLUNES 8/233
Carisbrook shook aside previous top order struggles to pull off an incredible six-wicket victory over Clunes in a run-fest at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve.
Sensing a good batting pitch and a lightning-quick outfield, the Magpies won the toss and elected to bat first, but their plans quickly went awry with two wickets falling almost immediately.
Lucas Rais-Colvin was out first ball after Cole Harris lured him into a shot to Chris Lee, and Anthony Ellis was soon out for three after he hit a Liam Hurse delivery straight to Cooper Mark.
However, what that did do was allow Aidan Thompson, who made a welcome return in this game, as well as Mark Allen, to put together a 127-run third-wicket partnership, full of excellent shot-making and taking control of the game.
As a result, the Magpies were in a good position at the halfway point, with Allen passing 50.
However, the tide again turned when Carisbrook were able to get two wickets in quick succession.
Allen’s brilliant 76, off 55 deliveries, ended when Atticus Cullinan lured him into playing a shot to Hurse, before Dean Nalder got into the action by claiming Thompson’s wicket for 46, with Mark taking his second catch of the innings.
That brought Mitch Coppick out, and the captain got to work to ensure the Magpies would finish the innings strongly, despite wickets falling all around him.
David Coomber struck twice in quick succession to remove Brenton Jones and Brendan Ingram to leave the Magpies 6/165, before Dylan Davies was soon run out for four.
It was Coppick who did much of the grunt work, providing the bulk of a 31-run partnership with Brett Coon before the latter was bowled by Hurse, while Brad Stevenson played at a brisk pace to ensure Clunes made 233 from their 40 overs.
Coppick remained unbeaten on 54, and Stevenson finished on 11, while Coomber took 2/38 off four overs, and Hurse 2/46 off eight.
Carisbrook knew they needed to make things work at the top of the order to give themselves a footing in the game, and to do that, they shifted their top order, with William Coutts opening in place of Harris, while Lee was inserted at five.
The moves worked a treat — Martin Mark and Coutts put together a 65-run partnership for the opening stand, with Martin providing 43 runs off 39 deliveries, before he was bowled by Stevenson.
Nalder came out to the crease and again showed his ability to score quickly, putting together another big partnership to have the Brookers well in the game.
His 42 off 30 deliveries brought the score up to 123 before Coon removed him with a catch off his own bowling.
Coutts was remaining a constant, staying at the crease to allow his partners to get their eye in.
Hurse again provided a terrific knock, backing up from his 60 runs last week by adding 42, before Brendan Ingram struck to get his wicket.
However, Lee and Harris were determined to see Carisbrook home, and they duly delivered — Lee remaining unbeaten on 35 runs, and Harris scoring 10 runs off just five balls, as the Brookers secured a memorable win with four balls to spare
Brad Stevenson led the way for Clunes with some tight bowling, taking 1/21 off eight overs.
