CARISBROOK 16.12 (108) def TALBOT 3.5 (23)
It was one of the more special days in Carisbrook’s history as a club, marking the occasion with an 85-point victory against Talbot.
While the big win against Talbot keeps the Redbacks in second position on the ladder, it was secondary to the cause of the day, as much-needed funds were provided from both teams for Harley Hunter and his family, with Isla Hunter’s courageous fight with Classic Infantile Batten Disease (CLN1).
The Redbacks were determined to make it a special day for the Hunter family, with Harley at the forefront of many Carisbrook attacks in the opening stanza. They would kick five of the first six goals to open up a 27-point lead at the first break.
With the Carisbrook ground proving to be very heavy under foot, the second quarter was the biggest struggle of the day for both teams, however, it seemed Talbot were the better team for large periods. However, from five shots at goal, the Hawks could only score one goal, while Carisbrook made the most of their opportunities to score two goals to lead by 30 points at half time.
The third quarter saw the Redbacks skip away, kicking six goals while rendering the Hawks scoreless throughout the entire period to turn their five-goal break into a 67-point lead at the final change.
The Redbacks had held their end of the equation in their battle to stay in the top two, and while they had their opportunities to turn the margin into a triple-figure affair, three goals from nine shots in the final term saw them win by 85 points.
Ash Munari was comfortably best on ground, adapting to the conditions the best with his seven-goal haul, while Hunter also earned praise for a dominant performance on what was an emotional day for him and his family. Matt Jukes, Zak Rinaldi, Michael Zelechich and Lachlan Edwards were also great performers for the Redbacks.
For the Hawks — who now must win their final-round clash with Trentham to play finals, they were best served by Nathan Bond, Zachary Graham, Sam Hitchings, Trent Severino and Jude McGuire.
Following the game, the mothers and daughters of Carisbrook played a very special three-quarter football match in support of Isla Hunter, as players from both teams stuck around to watch the game. It was a much-celebrated game played in front of a big crowd.
