Carisbrook celebrated Nick Wright’s 200th game in style, recording an eight-point victory over Trentham in what was an incredibly tense affair befitting of a final.

It was a game where both teams were dominant in passages, and at the end of it all, the Redbacks maintained a top-two spot with a final quarter flurry.

The Redbacks got off to the better start, kicking four goals to one in the first quarter to open up an early 18-point lead.

While there were early alarm bells for the Saints, it didn’t seem to harm them too much, as they got their game back in order in the second. Both teams kicked three goals apiece, but Trentham pegged back the margin by two points to sit 16 points down at the main break.

The third quarter belonged to Trentham. While tempers frayed multiple times during the quarter, the Saints were a little more composed with ball in hand, kicking four goals to hit the front, while rendering Carisbrook goalless.

Both Carisbrook coach Luke Treacy and Trentham coach Clive Raak were revving up their players as a raucous crowd tried to urge their team home, but it was Carisbrook who slowly but surely edged themselves back into the game, bit by bit.

Perhaps fittingly, it was Wright who had one of the biggest inputs of the afternoon, kicking a big goal in his milestone game late on to help the Redbacks take a momentous win.

A commanding performance at both ends of the ground from Harry Butler, kicking three goals and taking a number of important marks, helped him earn best on ground honours, continuing his stellar season, while Jackson Bowen played a key role in the ruck.

Thomas Gardam, Zak Rinaldi, Andrew Toan, and Anthony Zelencich, who added another four goals to take his season tally to 68, were also named in the best.

Trentham remain in third, but knowing that they have lost their two games by a combined 15 points, they know they are right in the frame to pounce should the Redbacks and Harcourt encounter any problems.

Taylor Ford was exceptional, while Michael Hourigan, Jake Keogh — who kicked three goals — Joel Cowan, Harrison Knight and Adam Raak also played well.
