Highland Gold started round 10 in the highly coveted fourth place, but with four teams within three points on the ladder, they needed an upset win against the third-placed Maryborough Golf.

Despite a spirited challenge from Highland Gold, Maryborough Golf pulled through with a 61-51 victory.

Graeme Orr started proceedings by defeating Adrian Masterman-Smith 23-18 for Maryborough Golf. Then, Dennis Prosser drew Highland Gold level with an 18-15 win over the in-form Francis Smith.

Kort Gay took the deciding rink for Maryborough Golf, conquering Lowen Clarke 23-15.

Highland Gold’s defeat provided a golden opening for Talbot to leapfrog their finals rivals on the table, needing to score one point against pennant contenders Dunolly Blue.

After their 100-25 defeat to Dunolly Blue in round three, Talbot not only scored points but seemed destined to earn a stunning victory when Barbara Crossley took an 18-17 thriller against David Wardell and Chris Crossley vanquished Tony Galofaro 21-14.

With his team trailing by two rinks, Chris Williams stunned Talbot with a 29-16 victory over Ray Prentice, keeping Dunolly Blue inside the top two with a 60-55 victory.

That allowed Carisbrook to generate a 10-point cushion inside the top four with a 63-49 win against Dunolly Gold.

Nothing could separate Dunolly Gold’s Debbie Wintle and Carisbrook’s Cameron Taylor in their 18-18 draw, meaning the game went down to the remaining two rinks.

Ross Gregory and Denise Matic delivered for Carisbrook, with Gregory just edging out Fabio Delconte 18-17 while Matic overpowered Wayne Stephens 27-14.

While Carisbrook celebrated its monumental result, ladder-leaders Highland Tartan placed the star on their undefeated Christmas tree with a 119-31 demolition of Avoca.

Tartan now holds a commanding 10-0 record atop the midweek pennant after Greg Shay triumphed over Ann Loosmore 39-9, Harvey Pearce dominated Matthew Higgins 40-11 and Garry Coburn overcame Ian Proctor 40-11.
