A terrific battle between Maldon and Carisbrook went down to the wire, with the Redbacks eventually prevailing by one goal in a thrilling encounter.

The margin was no more than five goals at any change, with Carisbrook starting the better in the early stages by scoring 15 goals to 11 to lead at the first break. Abbey Nalder scored eight goals, while Andrea Schafer added seven. For Maldon, a player not shown in the system added six goals, while Katie Tong added five.

It was another high-scoring second quarter as both teams moved the ball around well, with Carisbrook scoring another 15 goals, while Maldon added 14, with the Redbacks leading 30-25 at the main break. Nalder added 10 goals for the Redbacks, with Schafer adding five, while for Maldon, Tong added nine goals.

The third quarter saw the Dons fight back and close the gap significantly, adding 11 goals to eight to trail 36-38 at the last change. Tong scored seven of Maldon’s 11 goals, while for Carisbrook, Nalder scored six times and Schafer twice.

The last quarter went right down to the wire, with a goal-for-goal affair. Maldon won the quarter by a goal, but it wasn’t enough to overhaul the Redbacks, who eventually held on. Nalder scored five goals and Schafer four for the Redbacks, while Tong scored four goals for the Dons.

Carisbrook will now look to make it three wins on the trot when they host Campbells Creek next week, while Maldon — who have now lost narrowly to two of last year’s top four teams, will look to avoid a third straight loss when they host the Maryborough Giants.
