Redemption has been on the minds of Carisbrook ever since Lake Wendouree knocked them out of the finals last season.

On Sunday, the Lady Redbacks will have a chance to both simultaneously gain that win they’ve been seeking and also make a statement for the season ahead.

Sure, they might not have got the first up win they sought last week against East Point, but the Lady Redbacks will know they will be up for the fight against a team they have steadily been closing the gap on over the last 12 months.

Last week, Carisbrook put in an excellent performance against East Point, and were right in the game until the end of the third quarter.

While it resulted in a 23-point loss, it was just four points the difference at half time, and they will look to convert chances this week against the Lakers, who are coming off an 80-point defeat against the might of Darley last week.

The Lady Redbacks had four meetings against the Lakers last season, and continued to improve every time.

In round four, the Lady Redbacks were unable to stop an irresistible Lakers outfit from piling on 28 goals in a 184-point loss, but in just a month, had dropped the margin to 67 points, as well as kicking three goals.

In round 15, that was reduced to four goals, and while they eventually lost the elimination final by 44 points, they showed how much they were able to improve against a full-strength Lakers team.

This time around, they will look to take the game right up to the Lakers as they return to the scene of that round four loss from 2023, hoping to turn their fortunes around.

Anika Munn, Maddison Smith, Tiani Jardine, Isabella Hoban and Grace Brady were the impressive performers last week, and they’ll be seeking another good effort this time around.

Meantime, the under 16 girls will be starting their home campaign this weekend when they host Redan on Sunday morning, hoping to turn around a tough 141-point loss last week against North Ballarat.

The team will have significant reason for optimism that they can compete with the Lions, having lost both their games by just eight and 14 points respectively last season, and with home ground advantage, they will be keen to muster up enough to bounce back and even the ledger.

Georgina Bates, Rhani Evans, Olivia Rogers, Remi Jardine, Tamika Loone-Grundy and Erika Arce were their best players last week.
