Carisbrook outlasts competitive Harcourt
Despite prolonged resistance from the hosts, Carisbrook might proved too much for the heartful Harcourt, eventually taking a laboured 17-goal victory.
The Lions maintained a competitive distance throughout thanks to their refortified defence, but the Redbacks’ quality ensured their opponents were kept at a safe distance.
While Carisbrook were unchanged from their convincing victory over Maldon the week prior, Harcourt’s lineup received a massive boost. Alongside the valued return of Jarrenhy Webb, Lily Gautam made her season debut, giving the Lions an extra option in the midcourt.
Webb’s reintroduction to goal attack gave the Lions’ attack a noticeable bite. With Webb’s presence diverting some of the defensive attention from Jordan Bagley, Zoe Mclean linked well with both shooters early.
However, Carisbrook co-captains Laura Hurse and Katie Bilton ensured teammates Abbey Nalder and Jordan McClure scored 14 first-quarter goals to give the visitors a six-goal edge at quarter time.
Despite Carisbrook’s best efforts to generate a more substantial margin during the second quarter, the defensive trio of Laura Suckling, Carly Chaplin and Ursula van Dyk proved to be a thorn in those plans with their constant pressure in the Redbacks’ attacking third.
Not to be outdone, Finley Wagstaff, Chloe Egan and Lauren Jones continued their excellent job containing the Lions’ promising offence, allowing Carisbrook to increase the margin out to 10 goals at half time.
The contest remained evenly matched when play resumed for the second half, with both teams remaining remarkably consistent despite their strong defensive opposition.
After stints at wing attack and centre late in the first half, Gautam slotted in well at wing defence, allowing Ursula van Dyk to make an impact further up the midcourt.
The Redbacks were also tinkering with their lineup in the third quarter, with Charlotte Cain and Hurse moving further back defensively while Jones shifted into centre.
Those alterations didn’t slow Carisbrook’s momentum, holding a 39-25 lead at three-quarter time.
Harcourt continued to compete against one of the league’s heavyweights until the final whistle, having their closest quarter in the fourth term to conclude arguably their most complete performance of the season.
While the final margin was closer than originally expected, the desired result remained the same for the Redbacks, claiming another four points with a disciplined 50-33 victory.
Despite some cold shooting patches, Carisbrook’s Nalder finished as the game’s leading scorer with 32 goals, well supported by McClure’s 18.
The shooting of Bagley and Webb was one bright facet in a propitious performance from the hosts, finishing with 19 and 14 goals respectively.
