Carisbrook may have lost by 107 points to an irresistible Darley outfit taking all before them in the Ballarat Football League Women’s competition, but it represented another step forward for the Lady Redbacks on Sunday at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve.

It’s worth reminding that at this juncture last year, Darley had defeated Carisbrook by 207 points. To lop 100 points off in one year speaks volumes of Carisbrook’s level of improvement — while it’s not regular winning football yet, the formula of improvement is clearly showing.

On Sunday, the first quarter saw Carisbrook fight hard in the early stages, but a number of late goals to the Devils towards the end of the quarter saw them lead by 30 points at the first change, kicking five goals to the Lady Redbacks’ solitary behind.

The second quarter was perhaps the Lady Redbacks’ best of the day, even if there was a slight delay of game for the sprinklers accidentally turned on inside the Darley forward line.

Regardless, the Devils could only kick three goals, while Carisbrook scored another behind, with the margin at 50 points at half time.

Realistically, it was the third quarter which saw Darley pile on a number of goals, having their most productive quarter of the afternoon in kicking six goals to no score to extend their lead to 87 points to the last change.

Much like the second quarter, Carisbrook were determined to fight the game out and did so successfully, restricting Darley to three goals as they eventually went down 17.8 (110) to 0.3 (3).

At the time of production, there were no best players listed for Carisbrook.

Meantime, Carisbrook’s under 16 team had their most encouraging performance so far in the early season, but it wasn’t quite enough to defeat Bacchus Marsh, who eventually won by 28 points, 8.9 (57) to 4.5 (29).

There were no quarter-by-quarter scores at the time of production, but best players for the Lady Redbacks were Amber Hogarth, Rhani Evans, Emme Johnson, Remi Jardine, Tamika Loone-Grundy and Sofia Rametta, with Evans kicking two goals, and Tahlia Jordan and co-captain Laylah Smith one each.

The Lady Redbacks will now meet Redan this Sunday at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve, while the under 16s will face Ballarat Swans.
