CARISBROOK 6/119 def BEAUFORT 8/107
Carisbrook marked their return to the Maryborough District Cricket Association A grade competition in style, recording a 12-run victory over Beaufort.
It was the one that got away from the Crows, however, as they were unable to keep the line and length in check on the field, bowling 50 extras to help boost Carisbrook’s total to 119, making their chase a little bit too hard in the end, and stretching their winless run back to February 2022.
Beaufort won the toss and elected to send the Brookers in, and were struggling early on to put pressure on opening batters Leigh Koop and Cole Harris, with 17 of their first 18 runs extras.
Eventually, Joel Pymer was able to land the breakthrough getting the wicket of Harris for a duck, and shortly after snaring Koop’s wicket for one run to leave Brook 2-27.
Soon after, Lachlan Oddie would have the Crows’ third wicket when he left the dangerous Dean Nalder wanting at a delivery, with Craig Grant catching him out of his crease for seven, and the game was in a precarious position with Brook 3/45.
However, first drop Jarryd Coghlan steadied the ship, and was able to play some good strokes as he helped take the score to 70.
James Adam was next to fall for three when he hit an Oddie delivery straight to Zachery Dally, before Coghlan’s timely innings came to an end on 30 with 14 more runs on the board.
William Coutts and Caleb Cluff needed to provide some quick runs to get Brook’s total towards six an over, and duly delivered, with Coutts putting on 15 before he was run out at the end of the innings, while Cluff added 13.
Brook eventually finished on 8/119, with Oddie’s four overs proving to be economical, taking 2/10 off his four overs, while Pymer took 2/31 off four overs.
The Crows essentially had to play an aggressive style to get themselves into the game, but they were unable to settle in to a rhythm as Nick Broad led from the front for Carisbrook.
Broad’s early spell put the Crows on the back foot, landing the key wickets of Craig Grant, Blake Jantzen and Oddie to leave them teetering at 3/15.
The Crows needed a response and it was forthcoming from Jay English and Pymer, who put on a 40-run stand for the fourth wicket.
However, with overs running out, Pymer was bowled by Koop, before English was similarly bowled with just four more runs added by Nalder.
The Crows kept fighting, with Ben Woolidge and Dally putting 25 runs on the board, but Broad’s reintroduction to the attack helped Carisbrook keep the game on their terms, with Woolidge hitting a ball straight to Koop, before he was on a hat trick by clean-bowling Kriss Ellis the next ball.
Dally and Richard Stokes provided some late hitting to take the score to 107, before Adam claimed his only wicket of the game, with Coutts stumping Dally for 18.
Broad’s stunning early spell was the catalyst for Brook taking the win, finishing with figures of 5/20 off his four overs. Alongside him, Nalder bowled a steady length, finishing with 1/14 off his four overs, while Koop had figures of 1/14 off three overs.
