MARYBOROUGH 9/98 def by CARISBROOK 0/99

Carisbrook’s dream return to A grade continued, taking their second victory in succession courtesy of a 10-wicket victory over Maryborough.

The win means the Brookers share equal billing on top of the table with Laanecoorie Dunolly, and based on their current form, may loom as the team most likely to challenge the throne.

Maryborough won the toss and elected to bat, with strike pairing Mitch McClure and Tom Hart looking to push the pace early.

However, their partnership ended in the second over, with Nick Broad luring Hart into looping a shot straight up and into Cooper Mark’s hands, removing him for six.

Soon after, McClure was next to go, hitting a Rohan Mackay delivery straight into the waiting arms of Atticus Cullinan for six.

Jackson Goodwin and Bradey Tranter were tasked with ensuring Maryborough were able to get some runs on the board, but Goodwin was the third man to be removed for six after playing a Broad delivery to Dean Nalder.

Lachlan Bursill was next to go, dismissed in unlucky fashion as a scramble at the stumps left him ricocheting the ball into the wicket for three.

When Troy Bursill was dismissed LBW by Nalder, the Owls were in desperate trouble at 5/38, although Tranter, importantly, was still on deck.

However, wickets were tumbling around him. Jasper Trickey was next to go, clean bowled by Leigh Koop for four runs.

Sam Thomson provided some resistance with Tranter starting to play some shots, and helped stick around for an 18-run partnership — the Owls’ best of the afternoon to that point. But Cooper Mark came on and lured him into playing a shot to James Adam.

Mark had his second wicket shortly after when he trapped Jacob Glen in front for LBW, with the Owls reeling on 8/69.

Tranter decided to tee off in order to add some runs to the total, and was successful along with Troy Hubble in providing 26 important runs.

Adam took the final wicket, successfully luring Tranter into leaving his crease, with William Coutts stumping him for a well-made 45.

Maryborough eventually finished on 9/98 off their 20 overs.

In response, it was all Carisbrook as they were able to keep the Owls at bay throughout their entire batting innings. The only negative was a suspected Achilles injury to Koop, which saw him retire not out on 16.

However, Martin Mark and Dean Nalder would continue on the good work at the top of the order, with Martin eventually finishing on 59 not out — the highest score of the season so far, while Nalder finished unbeaten on 19, chasing down the Owls’ 98 with 30 balls to spare.

Carisbrook now face an important double-header weekend against Clunes, while Maryborough face an uphill battle to get their season back on track when they travel to Laanecoorie Dunolly.
