Carisbrook’s senior women’s will be looking to follow in the footsteps of their under 16 counterparts this weekend, who recorded an exhilarating victory to keep their finals chances alive.
The Lady Redbacks senior team will play second-from-bottom Bacchus Marsh at home this weekend, which likely represents their best chance of a win in their first season back in the competition.
Indeed, it is the Cobras who Carisbrook have been most competitive against in their two meetings so far.
Back in round one, two second quarter goals helped Carisbrook stay within four points of the Cobras at half time, but Bacchus Marsh cleared away in the second half to eventually record a 42-point victory.
Three weeks ago, Carisbrook were again competitive, but a three-goal third quarter helped the Cobras lead by 32 points at the final change, before two final-quarter goals from the Lady Redbacks helped them get back within 19 points by the end of the game.
Avoiding falling behind early on will be the key goal for the Lady Redbacks this week, with East Point getting away quickly in their game last week, kicking five of their 10 goals in the opening term.
While the final three quarters showed Carisbrook’s ability to adjust defensively, the damage was already done, and they went down by 70 points.
Olivia Butler, Julianne Baldock, Grace Love, Caitlin Butler, Anika Munn and Zeanna Cassells were all in good form on Sunday, and will be looking to continue that to guide the Lady Redbacks to a much-awaited first win.
Meantime, the under 16s kept their finals chances alive with an unbelievable come-from-behind win over Storm — a result which puts them just one win behind the top four.
While they face a big challenge in second-placed Bacchus Marsh this week, there’s no doubt that this result will give the Lady Redbacks some confidence going forward.
A goal apiece in the opening term saw Storm lead by one point at the first change, before they kicked another goal in the second to extend that lead to eight points at the main break.
The third quarter was a scrap, with just one behind recorded by the Storm to lead by nine points at the final change.
But some adjustments made by coach Nick Weaver saw the Lady Redbacks storm back into the game, kicking two final-quarter goals, while holding the Storm scoreless, to record a memorable three-point victory.
Tamika Loone-Grundy, Remi Jardine, Tiani Jardine, Mahli Stone, Maddison Smith and Rhiannon Carter were named in the best players, while Memphis Hoober, Tiani and Peyton Clark were the goalkickers.
