Carisbrook fire a timely reminder
Local fire brigades responded to a grass fire in Carisbrook last week, with CFA urging residents to take precautions when burning off.
The Carisbrook Fire Brigade was first called to the scene last Thursday at Newmarket Road near Tullaroop Creek at around 3.50 pm after a planned burn-off on a private property quickly became out of control.
“Residents were burning off some garden waste, they had all of the appropriate practices in mind but a gust of wind caught it and put it out into the paddock,” Carisbrook Fire Brigade Captain Ian Boucher said.
“There were two of our units [at the scene], there was our tanker and our Forward Command Vehicle and because of the windy conditions we called in Maryborough as well.
“There was a heap of smoke there, there was a lot of green grass but there is a lot of dry stuff under the green grass so surprisingly it is burning very well at the moment.”
The blaze was deemed under control by local fire brigades at around 4.10 pm and no injuries were sustained.
With the commencement of the Fire Danger Period on Monday, November 11 looming ever closer, and the increase in early season callouts, Mr Boucher is urging residents to remain cautious in their preparations.
“People need to be very careful — even though conditions do look green, there is still potential for fires,” he said.
“There have been quite a few fires and it’s very early in the season for us to be getting as many callouts as we have so far.
“Just make sure you have an area cleared around your burning, you have got water on hand which [the property owners at Thursday’s fire] had and register your burn-offs.
“All the best laid plans can still go awry so make sure you keep an eye on the weather conditions.”
