It was perhaps cruel that Carisbrook could lose by the exact same scoreline — 51-7 — as their last meeting to Lake Wendouree on Sunday, after putting in a stellar effort for three quarters.
Indeed, this is a different Carisbrook to last year — one which has the added capability to defend very well, while also being able to compete harder throughout the ground.
The Lady Redbacks were rewarded early in Sunday’s clash at CE Brown Reserve by kicking the first goal within the first minute, with a terrific kick on the run from Tiani Jardine.
For large passages of the first term, the Lady Redbacks deserved a quarter time lead, but a late goal to Lake Wendouree allowed the Lakers to lead by two points at quarter time.
With the breeze at their backs, the Lakers were able to dictate terms throughout the second quarter, but Carisbrook’s resolute defending meant they could only garner one goal out of their forward thrusts, meaning it was a 12-point deficit at the main break.
Carisbrook looked to get back into the game as the third quarter got underway, but with the breeze slowly dying down, they were unable to get more than one point on the board.
Still, importantly, they held the Lakers to just three behinds for the quarter, meaning that they sat 14 points behind at the last change.
With everything to play for, it was the Lakers who finished the game the stronger, as their experienced heads allowed them to dictate terms, while Carisbrook were worn out after three quarters of battling.
The Lakers scored four goals to no score to eventually run out 44-point winners.
Katherine O’Rielly, Isabella Hoban, Maddison Smith, Anika Munn, Olivia Butler and Tara Curtis were all named in the best for Carisbrook.
The Lady Redbacks’ under 16 girls played their first home game of the season against Redan, but were unable to stop the Lions from taking a 53-point victory.
It was tight in the opening quarter, with Carisbrook scoring two behinds to trail by five points at the first change, but it was all Redan in the remaining three quarters as they scored seven goals.
Olivia Rogers, Rhani Evans, Amber Hogarth, Sasha Serry, Tahlia Jordan and Eden Weaver all played well for the Lady Redbacks.
Carisbrook now moves to a clash against Darley at home in the seniors this week, while the under 16s travel to Bacchus Marsh.
