Carisbrook’s Friday night experiment was a major off-field success, even if, on the field, they went down by 19 points to East Point.
The Lady Redbacks had a competitive outing under lights, with a good crowd making their way to Carisbrook Recreation Reserve for their standalone Ballarat Football League match.
The opening quarter saw Carisbrook have much of the territory up forward, but it was East Point who led at the first change courtesy of a late goal.
It was still a battle in the second quarter as Carisbrook defended resolutely, but East Point were starting to win the key battles through the midfield, and took good territory with it, allowing them to increase their lead.
East Point continued to win the key one on ones in the third quarter as they added another goal, making it three goals to nil as the last quarter started.
While Carisbrook were keen on fighting out the game, they were successful in adding a goal through Rachael Stubbings to ensure they would finish the game with a good base.
In the end, the losing margin of 19 points was an improvement on their round one clash, with the Lady Redbacks scoring 1.4 (10) to East Point’s 4.5 (29).
Olivia Butler was excellent for the Lady Redbacks as she did what she could to drive the team through the midfield, while Tiani Jardine also played a good role. Anika Munn, Danae Every, Stubbings and Abbey Bertram were also named in the best players.
On Sunday morning, Carisbrook’s under 16s played, and while they went scoreless, they were impressive in holding Darley goalless in the second half in what was a 32-point loss.
The Lady Redbacks were overwhelmed by the Devils in the first half, scoring two goals in each of the first and second quarters as they took a 29-point lead going into the main break.
But the Lady Redbacks did exceptionally well to limit the scoring thereafter, with the Devils scoring two points in the third term, and just one in the last.
Chloe Wyatt, Amber Hogarth, Rhani Evans, Olivia Rogers, Emme Johnson and Georgina Bates were all named in the best for Carisbrook.
The Lady Redbacks will now seek a victory in an interesting encounter against Lake Wendouree on Sunday, with the under 16s hosting East Point in the curtain-raiser.
