The Pyrenees Historic Vehicle Club nominated two special causes to put a combined $2000 donation towards last week.

The club donated $1000 each to the Maryborough VicRoads team who are currently raising money for bowel cancer research, and the Maryborough Riding Develops Ability (RDA) group.

Club treasurer Sally Hailey said the idea to donate to the bowel cancer cause came from hearing the story of VicRoads’ Audrey Bartlett, who is currently undergoing treatment for bowel cancer.

“As a car club we like to be community focused and as we get funds we like to distribute them back to the community,” she said.

“I read Audrey’s story in The Advertiser, and then we as a club were talking about who we could make donations to and I told them about VicRoads.

“It was ideal because VicRoads has a great connection with the car club because all our members are coming in all the time.

“We’ve got over 200 members and we do have quite a few going through different cancer journeys at the moment.”

Ms Bartlett said the money raised is used to help research bowel cancer treatments like the one she is currently experiencing.

“This donation is fantastic,” she said.

“You don’t realise who it’s helping. The trial treatment I’m going through at the moment is making a difference to my tumours, so if we’re donating to research it can help further that and gives me and others more time, which is amazing.

“There are so many local people receiving treatment for bowel cancer and all types of cancer. If they can get funding for research that makes a difference, it’s so worthwhile.”

Ms Hailey said the car club committee was also happy to provide some funding for the RDA.

“I told the committee that I see Aileen Marshall (from Maryborough RDA) out at every Talbot Farmers’ Market trying to make some money for the RDA, and I thought if someone puts that much effort in, can we as a club help them?,” she said.

“There was an immediate positive response, both to the RDA and bowel cancer idea.”

Aileen said the money will go towards building new yards at RDA.

“Donations like this are fantastic, it’s what keeps us going,” she said.

“Particularly with COVID, we’ve been unable to fundraise.

“This funding will go towards constructing yards for the horses at our grounds because we currently don’t have any. It’ll mean the horses don’t have to be tied to a tree or float all day and our riders will be able to safely brush and interact with the horses.”
