Lauren Butler will remain in Collingwood’s AFLW leadership group for the 2023 season.

Carisbrook local Lauren Butler has been named in the Magpies’ AFLW leadership group for a second season, as the Pies gear up for season eight of the competition.

The Pies will be led by Brianna Davey, as sole captain for the first time, following season seven co-captain Steph Chiocci’s move to St Kilda.

Butler continued her march as a key player at the Magpies last season, ranking fifth for total disposals, collecting 165 at an average of 13.8 per game, while also collecting a team-high 6.5 intercept possessions and 3.7 rebound 50s.

It was enough to see her named as a member of the 42-player All Australian squad, although she just narrowly missed out on selection in the final team.

She has also been awarded the Collingwood Player’s Player two seasons in a row.

The Pies will be looking to rebound from their sixth-place finish in season seven, having won their first final against the Western Bulldogs before they were knocked out by the Adelaide Crows in the semi-final stage.

The Magpies will launch the season alongside reigning premier Melbourne when the two teams meet on Friday, September 1 at Ikon Park.
