Brigade seeks new members
Maryborough Fire Brigade is once again calling for more volunteers to fulfil a range of important duties and support their team.
Since the brigade’s last recruitment drive, numerous locals from all walks of life have joined the team. One of the newest recruits Dillion Wright, jumped at the hands on chance to meet others in the community.
“I’m actually new to Maryborough, I moved here about nine months ago, I saw it as a good opportunity to meet new people and contribute to the local community. I don’t think there was much of a better reason to come join the fire brigade,” he said.
“I was also one of those kids, where as a youngin’, one of the fire fighters lifted me onto a truck, and I always wanted to get back in. I’ve always loved fire trucks.
“The friends you make, the people you get to help along the way, it’s all worth it.”
Another recent recruit Philip Pearce said joining the fire brigade was his way of giving back to the community.
“The community has been pretty good to me since I’ve moved here, so I thought I’d give back to it, and come down to the CFA and give it a go here,” he said.
“It’s brilliant once you get moving, once the ball gets rolling and the fire season comes, it will get going.”
Now at around 40 volunteers, the Maryborough Fire Brigade provides training and support to new team members.
An information session will be hosted next Wednesday night where interested locals can seek further information.
Mr Wright is adamant anybody who feels up to the challenge should consider getting involved.
“During the day, I’m an office worker. If I can do it, you can do it.”
Maryborough Fire Brigade Captain Darryl Wagstaff told The Advertiser in June this year there are various roles any local can fill when joining the brigade.
“We need to get extra members to come in so we can have a continuous turn out on members during day and night,” he said.
“We also need to have non-operational fire fighters that we have as members, such as school presenters, but it’s also our operational turn outs, and that we need to have those extra people, to spread the work load out with the current members we have.”
Maryborough Fire Brigade are also hosting their Summer Safety Information Session this Sunday, providing locals with assistance in creating a bushfire plan, in the lead up to the fire season.
The brigades brigade community Safety Coordinator Raelene Williams said the brigade will provide hands on assistance to the community, a chance to meet the local fire brigade and provide helpful information and support.
“This year we are combining our annual ‘fire safety’ session with a practical hands-on workshop where our volunteers will be available to assist community members in writing their own individual bushfire plans,” she said.
“We will have maps of Maryborough and surrounds that will clearly show where the most ‘at risk’ properties are for bushfire and grass fires. This will provide a great visual for residents and assist them in making their bushfire plans.
“We encourage residents to consider not only their own safety but those of more vulnerable people in out community including ageing family members and neighbours who may need assistance to prepare.”
The session will run this Sunday, November 9 from 2 to 4 pm at Maryborough Fire Station.
Following this, Maryborough Fire Brigade’s next recruitment session will take place next Wednesday, November 12 from 6.30 to 7.30 pm at Maryborough Fire Station.
