The first round of the Goldfields Midweek Pennant for the 2022/23 season commenced on Tuesday afternoon in good weather.
Carisbrook ensured they would sit atop the ladder at the conclusion of the first round by sweeping Maryborough Golf, taking allthree rinks convincingly.
Carisbrook’s 67-39 victory was assured when they were able to take rinks one and two by scorelines of 24-12 and 24-13 respectively, while Golf had a much more competitive affair on rink three, losing 19-14.
Avoca were the highest scorers of the round, with their 80 shots more than enough to see them defeat Dunolly Gold by 32 shots.
The damage was done on rink one and three, with Avoca winning the first rink 28 shots to 14, while a much more convincing 32-9 victory on rink three ensured they would get a good percentage boost. Dunolly Gold at least got some premiership points, thanks to their 25-20 victory on rink two.
Talbot’s season got off to a promising start, defeating Highland Gold 63-47.
A dominant performance on rink one, which saw Talbot take control with a 28-10 victory, ensured they would be able to set the pace, and a 20-15 victory on rink two ensured they were comfortable victors. Gold saved face with a 22-15 victory on rink three to take some much needed premiership points.
In the closest contest of the round, a 30-16 rink three win ensured Highland Tartan were able to hold off Dunolly Blue, winning 62-54.
Rinks one and two were close affairs, with Tartan taking the first rink in a thriller, 19-17, while Blue turned the tables in rink two, winning 21-13.
But Tartan’s rink three victory ensured they would take the 14 premiership points.
The midweek pennant continues next week, with Talbot hosting Carisbrook, while Dunolly will host Highland Gold. A local derby will be held at Maryborough Golf Club when Maryborough Golf hosts Highland Tartan, while Dunolly Blue hosts Avoca.
