A new book written by local author Lowen Clarke is being soft-launched to coincide with National Child Protection Week, aiming to raise awareness of healthy family environments and reduce the prevalence of family violence.

National Child Protection Week, which runs from September 3 to 9, is a time to bring into focus the significant harms experienced by children across the country as a result of child abuse.

To mark the national week Dr Clarke’s latest book, My Yes Family Competition, is centred around creating supportive families and reducing family violence in the community.

“The idea of the book is to support families and therefore reduce the incidence of any family or domestic violence,” he said.

“The My Yes Family Competition is the idea of an encouraging and supportive family which is probably based on my own recollections of how my own family was.

“Inbuilt into that is the idea that children can be proactive in ensuring the family is a good one for them to be in.”

The book forms part of a broader series centred around building healthy relationships in the community, with The Options Game already in circulation and another upcoming title already in early production.

Supported by Maryborough’s 16 Days of Activism committee, Dr Clarke said the book was an important step forward for the community.

“We’ll begin to launch this similarly to how The Options Game was launched last year in that it will start to appear at different locations in town and with different agencies and the like,” Dr Clarke said.

“There will be a more formal launch during the 16 Days of Activism, but to get it out during Child Protection Week is really good because they’re both such allied issues.”

The book will begin to appear locally over the coming days and will be launched more formally during the international 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which begins on November 25.
