Maldon warmed up for a blockbuster meeting with Lexton next week with a 71-point win over Talbot as they spoiled the Hawks’ party with Kayne Pettifer making a guest appearance for the Hawks at the Talbot Recreation Reserve.
The game took some time to warm up, with just two goals in the opening quarter, both scored through Maldon, as they took a 15-point lead at the first break.
However, the game opened up in the second term, with both teams able to hit the scoreboard. Pettifer was having a terrific battle with Maldon’s 17-year old swingman Callum Buchanan, and both were certainly having their moments, with Buchanan more than holding his own, while Pettifer was able to kick a couple of goals in the second term.
Nevertheless, Maldon kicked six goals to three to increase their lead to 35 points at the main break.
The third quarter was a good battle. Talbot did what they could to get back into the game, and Pettifer did what he could to lead the charge, kicking an astute goal under pressure from the pocket.
The Hawks indeed looked like they won the territory battle, but it was Maldon who continued to make the most of their opportunities, kicking four goals to two to increase their lead to 46 points at the last change.
Maldon were urged by coach Damien Lock to attack the game in the last quarter, and were able to do that by kicking five goals to one in the last term to increase the margin to 71 points.
Brodie Leonard-Shannon was dominant up forward, and kicked eight goals in a deserving best-on-ground performance as he feasted on the Dons’ terrific ball use through the midfield.
That was helped by the likes of Matthew Gray, Seb Greene and Alex Farrow working hard, while Buchanan was also recognised for his battle with Pettifer, and Coby Bennett was also named in the best.
For Talbot, Pettifer finished with three goals, while Luke Kemp, Darcy Osborne, Jude McGuire, Jayson Atkins, Bill Lindsay and Matthew York were named in the best.
